Lua function returns nil

Hi,

I made a custom Lua function that seems to be somewhat wrongly interpreted in the dialogue. It returns nil for when I call it in the dialogue (I have tested in C# it works perfectly). I still havent fully figured out how to debug Lua and the "info" setting is not helping very much.

Here is the dialogue.

Hi,

You can test out Lua functions at runtime on the Dialogue Editor's Watches page (use the field at the bottom and click Run) or by adding a Lua Console to the scene (press ~+L to open the Lua Console). Enter:

return PerformSkillCheck("Strength", 0)
At what point do you see nil?

Are there any warnings or errors in the Console window?

Hi, Thanks the watches shows nil too. No warnings in the console.

Hi,

The Lua variable Variable["x"] is different from the Lua variable x.

[var=x] refers to the Lua variable: Variable["x"]

Try setting your Script field to:

Code: Select all

Variable["x"] = PerformSkillCheck("Strength", 0)
Set the Condition field to something like:

Code: Select all

Variable["x"] == true
Alternatively, use x = PerformSkillCheck("Strength", 0) and x == true, but keep in mind that [var=x] will not show the value of this variable.

Also, it looks like your Dialogue System installation may be broken since the nodes are missing the icons that indicate that they have conditions and scripts. Are the files in Assets / Editor Default Resources / Dialogue System still there? (Assets / Editor Default Resources is a special Unity folder.)

Thank you very much, this helped. Also with the nodes - thanks I wanted to ask why isnt it showing, was looking for some setting. I reimported the project and moved the folder to assets, its perfect now.

BTW, Gizmos and Plugins are also special Unity folders. If you've moved the Dialogue System out of the Plugins folder, consider moving it back, since this will significantly speed up your compile times.
