License for Dialogue System for Unity

Post by sergmain »

Hi,

I have some questions regarding license for Dialogue System for Unity
- is that license per-game or for unlimited use?
- is that license per-seat, per company, or some other restriction?
- is it royalty-free
- is there any other restrictions which may trigger additional payments?

Thanks

Hi,

The Dialogue System uses a studio license, like almost everything on the Unity Asset Store except products under the Editor Extensions category. These are the details of the Unity Asset Store studio license:
  • Royalty-free.
  • One license required per physical location. If your physical location has 5,000 people, you still only need 1 license. However, if your studio consists of 3 people in different physical locations, you need 3 licenses.
  • Can use in an unlimited number of projects published by the same company/license holder.
  • You can modify the asset and distribute builds that use it. You cannot redistribute the asset itself.
  • No other financial restrictions.
If you have any other licensing issues, please let me know. I'll be happy to answer.

I have no idea how much you sell each day... but I just bought it 10mins ago!!

Your absolutely outstanding support and the way you answer everyone extremely fast convinced me that you really deserve all the support for creating such amazing tools! :)

Even if my current project does not end up living to expectations, this is a tool I will never regret buying and supporting! :)

Hello !

It seems that now the licence works with a "per seat" system. Can you confirm it ? We were confused in my team :D

Hi,

Yes, it's per seat now. Unity changed it for all assets in the Tools category. We did not have a say in the decision.

Note that even Unity's legal team has a nebulous definition of "seat". Their current messaging is that seats can float. So if you have 3 people working on the project on weekdays and a different set of 3 people working on the project on weekends, you only need 3 seats. If you have any questions about seats for which you need a definitive legal answer, please contact Unity. As a one-person small business, all I ask is that you be fair, however you interpret it.

Hi. I have a question regarding ho many seats our team needs. (We are going to use a private repository for version control of course)

2 of us will have to have a license (programmer and level designer, possibly the team leader as well) so we'll get those licenses.

We will have some team-members who will have access to the Unity Repository who will never touch anything that has to do with Dialogue System for Unity (3D modelers and other asset creators). Do they still need a seat?

We're all students by the way and not a super cheap studio.

I'm totally OK with 2-3 licenses (programmer, level designer, team lead).

This question comes up often because Unity hasn't done a great job of defining what a seat is, even internally with their own legal team, who are split on whether a seat is required for every person who opens the Unity project or only those who use an asset. So far, they've punted and left it up to asset publishers to enforce their own interpretations. From my perspective, as long as there's a seat for everyone who touches the Dialogue System, that's fine.

Note that Unity is discussing replacing the term "seat" with "user" in the future, where a user is anyone who opens a Unity project, regardless of what assets they touch in the project. This isn't set in stone, though, and Unity moves slowly on these things. Seat purchases made under the current licensing system will be unaffected. The current version of the EULA will still apply to them.

Good luck with your project!
