Hi Rob,
If you already have the Dialogue System, the built-in Dialogue Editor is a free option.
Other free options include:
- JLC Format: A simple text-based format that includes an option to use it with Google Docs, which supports multiple simultaneous contributors.
- Twine: A popular, free node-based editor
- TalkerMakerDeluxe: Another node-based editor written primarily for use with the Dialogue System
- Soon: YarnSpinner -- we're releasing the beta version of the Dialogue System's YarnSpinner import tomorrow. If you'd like to try out the beta version, let me know.

I do own Dialogue System, but am looking for an option to write outside Unity.
I will try out TalkerMakerDeluxe.
Twine and Yarn Spinner seem to be good options too.
Are there any drawbacks to them?

Twine and YarnSpinner are both somewhat freeform, so they don't have dedicated fields for Dialogue System-specific stuff like specifying the listener or cutscene sequencer commands.
Our YarnSpinner import is very extensive (we basically reimplemented the entire Yarn compiler and virtual machine system) but it's in beta so there might be a kink or two to work out.
