nevermind.. i ticked some things and got my problem to go away.
I'm sure ill have questions when i run into a slightly different problem - but for now i'm all good.

Great! Glad you got it working.

At some point, you could tidy up a couple actor assignments. In the Dialogue Editor, select Menu > Conversation Properties. (The Menu button is in the upper right.) This will show the conversation's properties.

Set the conversation's Actor to You. Set the Conversant to Study Door.

Then inspect the "You drowsily open your eyes..." node. Set its Actor dropdown to the Narrator actor.

At this point, the lower right corner of the canvas should show:

Actor: You
Conversant: Study Door

Then double-check that it's all still working the way you want.
