DS + L/H + QM integration/installation advice.

Post by jksleary »

Hi tony,

I have been using DS for a couple of months now(great asset) and have 70 odd defined characters and about 100 conversations in 3 different databases for org purposes. I havent defined or implemented any quests yet through DS.
I decided to take the plunge and get L/H and QM today.

I know you have posted similar advice before and I will follow your integration advice but just wanted your opinion on the following:

I want to setup factions and add most of the actors to factions for L/H purposes, also some of the actors will be questgivers with QM.

I am currently on an older version of DS and plan to update to the latest release now aswell. I have a few of your custom packages from the extras installed also.
What makes the most sense in terms of what order to upgrade DS, install L/H and QM?

Hi,

Thanks for getting Love/Hate and Quest Machine!

You can update them in any order. To avoid code duplication, LH, QM, and DS share a common library of code, in addition to their asset-specific code. If any code in the common library changes, all three assets get Asset Store version updates. So if you're importing the latest from the Asset Store, you'll never accidentally revert to an older version of the common code.

Custom packages from the DS Extras page are different files (except for any patches in the "Updated for version X.X.X" sections), so you won't accidentally overwrite those either.

I think the smoothest way to incorporate LH and QM, if you have the disk space, is to create new, empty projects for LH and QM. You can then follow the tutorials and mess around with the files as much as you want without impacting your main project. Once you're comfortable with the assets, import them into your main project, too. The good news is the LH and QM both have a significantly easier learning curve than DS.

If you don't have the disk space, or if you want to jump right into your main project, import Quest Machine first. Play the Demo and watch a couple of the tutorials (at a minimum, #1, #2, and #6). Then incorporate it into your game.
