How do I shrink a Response Button Template?

I'm sure there's a logic to it somewhere. Maybe you have to quest through a dark dungeon to find it. I still muddle through myself. In this case, I saw that the button's Rect Transform > Height was grayed out and set to an automatic value. So I played with its parent until I could get it to be editable, and unticking Control Child Size was what did it.
