Feature request: Can "split pipes into nodes" arrange the new nodes differently?

Post by AoF »

The way that "split pipes into nodes" places the new nodes always makes me want to rearrange it. They overlap in such a way that it's inconvenient to click on each one. As a result, I almost always rearrange them just like they'd be if I right clicked on a parent and said "create child node." My request is that instead of the new nodes overlapping when created, I'd like them to be placed just like if I right clicked and chose "create child node" recursively.

I know that if I had nodes below it already, the new ones would overlap with them, but that already happens most the time anyway, so I don't think my feature request is making anything worse.

What if you select the split nodes and Auto Arrange them?

It's possible for a node to split into several, "as in this | example text | that I'm | showing here." This is usually the case in fact, when writers send the designer long paragraphs of text that requires splitting. If they arranged like "Create Child Node", then it could potentially obscure several nodes. I'm open to discussion on this, but currently I think it's better to show them overlapping to visually distinguish them.

Can I auto arrange a subset of nodes, or does it have to be all of them? The auto arrange functionality is pretty good, but it gets confused with the hubs/loops in my game, so I've stopped using it.

Here's a before:

And here's an after:

It's harder for me to follow the one that happens after, but maybe that's just me. But if I can arrange a subset, that'd probably be fine.
If they arranged like "Create Child Node", then it could potentially obscure several nodes.
That's a good point. I guess if they overlapped completely, that could be annoying. In that case, what I'd personally to is temporarily drag the node I'm splitting to the side, split, highlight them all, then drag them back once I've made room.

I actually think the above would be a lot less steps than what I currently do: I zoom all the way out, try to highlight all the nodes that need to be lowered and drag them down to make enough room for the new nodes that will be created. Then I split, and one by one, drag each new node into position (w/ 6 new nodes, that's 6 clicks and 6 drags).

PS: I definitely didn't get the email that you replied to this. I know I've said that before and was mistaken, but this time I searched gmail to confirm.

You can lasso a set of nodes and auto arrange only those nodes.

I'll check about email notifications to make sure they're going out.

Cool, that's good to know.

I got the email notification for this reply, just so you know.
