Change variable name = no problem?

Just a very quick question I have and couldn't easily find the answer in old threads' titles.

I've just noticed that Variables could be sorted either by name or ID. Does that mean that they could be renamed without consequences when loading older savegames (because they're stored with the ID as key)?

No, sorry, they're saved by name.

The Dialogue Editor's sort feature only changes the order in which they're shown in the editor.
